Visual cultures and counter-narratives in Romania

Higher Seminar in Media and Communication Studies, and Art History:

Visual cultures and counter-narratives in Romania

Like any other former communist nations in Eastern Europe, Romania is embroiled in knowledge battles about its history and future. This Higher Seminar explores how alternative historical perspectives can challenge dominant narratives of contemporary Romania, through art and imagery.

The theme is also addressed through the exhibition Andrei Pandele & Dan Perjovschi: Witnessing pre /post Revolution in Romania at Art Space Södertörn which opens in Art Space Södertörn after the seminar, on October 17, 17.00-18.30, greetings at 17.30..

The seminar will feature researcher Uschi Klein (University of Brighton), whose research focuses on photography during Romania's communist era, with an approach to using photographs and oral history conversations to explore marginalised voices and hidden histories of the past. Klein is also the exhibition's curator. The seminar will also be attended by the internationally acclaimed artist Dan Perjovschi, and architect and photographer Andrei Pandele. The seminar is chaired by Art Historian Annika Öhrner and media scholar Patrik Åker, both at Södertörn University.

The Higher seminar and exhibition welcome researchers, students from any university, artists, and all other, interested in participating in a discussion about counter-narratives and action in the contemporary European landscape. No registration required.
