Learning outcomes

After completing the course, the doctoral student is able to:

  • critically examine and discuss the multidisciplinary focus and fields of knowledge that comprise the research area of Historical Studies, and problematise the opportunities, working methods and difficulties of multidisciplinarity
  • with a deep level of insight, describe and discuss current research in the subjects included in Historical Studies
  • locate their own thesis project, and those of others, in a multidisciplinary context and reflect on the importance of a multidisciplinary approach for the understanding of the past and present from a global perspective.

Course content, modules and examinations

The aim of the course is to provide knowledge about the area’s scholarly perspectives and general fields of knowledge, as well as to develop the ability to critically examine and discuss them. The aim is also to train the doctoral student in the multidisciplinary approach entailed by area studies. Particular emphasis is placed on the scholarly contributions made by the various subjects within Historical Studies: Archaeology, Ethnology, History of Ideas, Study of Religions and History.

Course design

Teaching is conducted through seminars.

Examination format

The course is examined through written and oral seminar assignments, active participation in seminar discussions and a concluding take-home examination.

To pass the course it is necessary to attend and be active at the seminars, complete the seminar assignments and the written take-home examination. No more than one seminar may be compensated for through other assignments. Permitted grades: pass, fail.



The grading criteria are distributed prior to the start of a course or module.

If a student has a certificate from Södertörn University for compensatory support, the examiner has the right to decide on an adapted examination or alternative form of examination in accordance with Södertörn University's regulations.

Restrictions on accreditation

The course may not be accredited as part of a degree if the contents are partly or wholly the same as a course previously taken in Sweden or elsewhere.
